It's FIFA World Cup in less than 2 months and the atmosphere is getting high with advertisement in TVs promoting this event more than the Thomas/Uber Cup that will be hosted by Malaysia.
With football season coming up, one can expect employers to cry foul over fake MCs and lecturers over snooze-addicted students. Another headache for the government and the society would be the gambling on those matches.
Actually one need not wait until this quad-annual event to see bets on football matches. Football season matches are held every week in different country, and with the Chinese dailies providing odds and wagers on those matches, it actually promotes gambling on the beautiful game.
Actually, Malaysians are same as other nationals and will bet on anything, even by-elections results. Even in football there are many ways of putting bets. Winning team, winning score, total corners, total fouls among others. Colour of the referees' attire perhaps?

I would welcome the government to legalise sports betting. The reason is people will bet on it even if it is illegal, so why should we let the money goes to the bookies and ah longs? Legalise it and the government may gain revenue, which in turns able to reduce other taxes, reducing taxpayers' burden.
Some people may argue that it would lead to more people betting since some may not have connections to bet now. But I feel that those who does not bet now won't bet too if it is legalise. If people want to gamble, they will find any way to obtain the service.
Legalising it might also reduce some unintended debt. If the betting is legalised, it could be functioning the same way as the current lottery outlet, which is through cash transactions. People would only bet on the money they have. Some will borrow money from external source but it is way better than the illegal gambling method now where you can bet without capital and pay only when there are losses.

There are other pros and cons of legalising this and it is open for debate. I for one will support legalisation of it but wish to see it handle with care. Why against it when we already have Genting, lottery and betting on horse racing?
