The Invention Of Lying

Just finished a nice movie in "The Invention of Lying", a movie so nice that GSC and TGV don't bring it into Malaysia. This movie come out October last year and was in the list of my wanted to watch movie. It stars Ricky Gervais and the ever pretty Jennifer Garner.

The story started of with a narration on the parallel world where people are not contaminated with lies. Everything they said and performed are pure truth, without adding salt and vinegar. One of the example is the Coke advertisement that tells the audience that Coke is a mixture of water and brown sugar, with the high sugar level causing serious diabetic and obesity problem. One more would be the old folks home being called "A sad place for hopeless old people".

The main character, Mark, is a screenplay writer in Lecture Films. What do they write when they don't lie (which leads to no stories)? History. LOLx Mark was a writer for 14th century "genre" movies (actually is a person sitting on a chair telling stories.), which is deemed the less desirable genre than the 17th to 20th century.

As his life going downwards sloping, he stumble upon a miracle in the bank - lying. He found out about lying but can't understand it, they don't even have a word for it. He continue to lie and everyone believes him, from having sex to prevent the end of the world to invention of bicycle. He also become famous through exceptional screenplay writings through fictional stories and revelation of the man in the sky.

Although the story is funny with its comedy genre, I felt that it also touched the human nature. A white lie makes people happy and less depressed, as seen when Mark consoling his mother on her deathbed, subsequently telling people that there are afterlife. There are also the dark side where he feel unhappy on some lies, especially to the girl he love.

Apart from this feelings part of the movie, there are only just laughter. He bring the people the 10 commandment written on two pizza boxes. A police officer who take high bribe because it will bring him out of the circle of petty crime and "preserve his personal integrity".

Through this movie, we learnt that sometimes lying might be essential but overdo it will caused problem. A really meaningful movie, but if you don't care about meaning, I will still recommend it to you for the laughter.
